Male roles are an important part of Afghan cultural. Males are the head of the house, Hosseini allows the reader to see that through out the book. After Rasheed comes from the hospital with Laila and is angry with her for not giving him a male child, he calls for Miriam to go heat his dinner up while he leaves Laila at the gate struggling to get inside the house because she is holding the baby and trying to get her bags inside.
